Extra Help From Mr. Howland

This year marks 25 years since the start of “Extra Help,” a live homework help television show in Boston. And Jerry Howland has been with it since its inception. Armed with a whiteboard, some markers, and an easy smile, Howland has taken calls from hundreds of high school students struggling with math. In this conversation, he tells host Dick Gordon about Owen Ozier, a student who started calling in to answer SAT test prep questions when he was 11. Ozier entered the “Extra Help” Hall of Fame when he was twelve, became one of Howland’s students in real life, and even co-taught a class with him.
